The Big Change Way

The Big Change Way is our organisational commitment to ways of working as a team and with partners, funders and changemakers. It guides how we collaborate, make decisions and live our values. Anyone who works with us, from funders to partners, can expect openness, a trust-based approach, and a shared commitment to learning.

Our values shape everything we do. They guide the choices we make, the relationships we build and the way we approach change. 

We are undaunted

We believe meaningful change requires courage, optimism and a willingness to take risks. We support people who challenge the status quo and pursue ambitious ideas for the systems around young people. We encourage and expect healthy challenge and constructive disagreement.

We are human-centred

Being human-centred means we bring empathy, and compassion when we work together. We embrace the learning that comes from making mistakes, we believe that everyone works with good intentions, and we value the power of listening to foster understanding and collaboration.

We are connected

We know lasting change happens through relationships. We bring together diverse perspectives and generations to learn from each other and build stronger solutions together. We always ask ourselves whose perspective is missing so we can address the gaps.

We are insight-led

We believe in thinking big, whilst being rigorous in grounding our understanding and analysis through learning from others, as well as through the work that we do. We put impact ahead of individual ego and we seek to understand through asking questions and remaining curious.

Big Change is on a mission to spark lasting change which is why we fund and support ideas that have the potential to influence systems and inspire wider transformation. We do this by connecting our community to spark even greater impact.

How we work together

We believe meaningful progress requires both collaboration and time for deep thinking. This is reflected in our working patterns at Big Change. We design our work so partners and teams have space to reflect, learn and focus on what matters most. This helps us build stronger ideas and more sustainable impact. We motivate through recognition, trust, positive energy and deep care. 

How we make decisions

Our decision-making approach balances agility with accountability: we are trust-based, knowing when we can move fast and remaining thoughtful and inclusive where it matters most. We foster a structured process which enables autonomy and growth whilst simultaneously considering careful use of charitable funds.

What caring means to us

Big Change fosters an environment where kindness, consideration and respect are at the forefront. The behaviours we model revolve around emotional connection, practical support, mindful presence and community spirit. We share the responsibility of care-giving whilst honouring boundaries of responsibility for one another.  When people feel supported and valued, stronger ideas, and stronger impact follow.

Safeguarding is a priority

Safeguarding at Big Change means protecting the dignity, wellbeing and safety of everyone we work with. We follow relevant safeguarding legislation and clear internal processes, while taking a trauma-informed approach that recognises how people’s experiences shape how they engage. By prioritising trust, care and accountability, we create environments where people feel safe, respected and supported.

Our commitment to intergenerational collaboration

At Big Change, we believe that lasting change happens with young people, not to them. For us intergenerational collaboration (IGC) means bringing young people and older adults together as equals - each contributing their experience and skills to spark lasting change. When generations collaborate with mutual respect and shared power, they unlock new possibilities, deepen learning, and make age a bridge to bigger, bolder change for everyone.

We are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion

Equity, diversity and inclusion shape who we support and the systems we seek to change. We are committed to tackling systemic barriers and bias in our funding and practices, and to becoming an anti-racist and anti-oppressive organisation. Through listening, learning and accountability, we aim to ensure those historically underserved are supported to lead change. At the heart of this is embracing feedback and committing to transparent reflection and progress.
