There are so many reasons why a Young Trustee has a valuable role to play in any organisation, but here are three that stand out to us at Big Change:

Did you know that, currently, the average age of a Trustee in England and Wales is 61? Or that only 3% of charity trustees are under 30?
We know that a diversity of perspectives strengthens decision making, but for Big Change, recent lived experience of the education ecosystem qualifies young people with a unique set of expertise key to our mission. We want to see young people set up to thrive in a world of constant change; the perspective of a trustee who is at the start of their career, facing this challenge and looking into this world as their future, is an important voice in the conversation.
At Big Change we love a challenge! Whether it’s Striving up a mountain, or transforming the education and learning system, we welcome ideas and people determined to support each other to achieve even bigger change together. We know from neuroscience that young people are ‘wired for innovation’. We look forward to the creative problem solving and encourage the constructive challenges our young trustee will bring to the table.
We’ve been inspired and humbled by young leaders bringing about change in their communities and advocating for their peers, and are on a learning journey understanding how to build meaningful youth engagement into our work. Our young trustee will have the opportunity to apply the insight from these experiences and networks to our work as a catalyst organisation, multiplying their impact and contributing to system change sets up all young people to thrive in life, not just exams.
