Monday Inspiration: The power of words
29 March 2016: posted by BigChange
Last week, we were reminded of the wonderful work of Sarah Kay; a young spoken word poet from New York and founder Project VOICE.
Project VOICE is a program that uses spoken word poetry to entertain, educate and inspire. Through performances and workshops, they aim to promote empowerment, improve literacy, and encourage empathy and creative collaboration. Project VOICE wants to give young people just that – a voice, and with that a strong desire to share and listen to each others’ stories. We were reminded of our friends at School 21 who also believe in the power of communication and collaboration to create positive change.
In this TED talk, Sarah performs her poetry and shares the story of how she built the courage to get on stage as an apprehensive 14-year-old.
Sarah’s TED Talk left us moved, and was a good reminder that it’s not always easy to express ourselves but that its important to. Her poem also put into (beautiful) words what it means to have a growth mindset;
You will put the “wind” in win some lose some, you will put the “star” in starting over and over, and no matter how many land mines erupt in a minute be sure your mind lands on the beauty of this funny place called life.
We don’t know about you guys, but we’re thinking a Big Change poetry writing session is in order.
